How are you feeling about the new year? A little distracted? Discouraged? Still determined? Me too! It’s been a doozy of a launch to 2021 and there’s likely more to come. Because it’s life. And there’s always more life to come – whether we’re tired, worried, excited, done, ready or not. There’s. Always. More.
So how can we keep our focus on being our best self? Here are three ways to support your strategic leadership at work and in life.
- Vision: If you don’t already have one, create a vision. Whether your new year resolution was related to parenting, your career, managing your team, attending more to self-care – spend a little time envisioning what success means to you. What does it look like when you have achieved your ideal in that area? Having a vision provides a more tangible “there” to pursue. Like saving for a vacation is made a little easier by having a picture of those little thatch-roofed bungalows suspended over turquoise water in Fiji, making the decision to unplug from work on time can be made easier by having a clear vision of the kind of parent you set out to be.
- Strategy: By when would you ideally like to be living that vision? How, specifically, do you plan to get there? What assistance (aka: help. aka: a four letter word we need to get more used to) will you need along our way? Who can you partner with / rely on / celebrate with as you go?
- Execution: Happy New Day! We don’t know what tomorrow will bring. A year is a long ass time and a lot of life will get in the way of our best laid plans. But you do have enough skill and enough energy to get through today. Keep your vision front of mind. Put your strategy in place – asking for help where you need it. Start fresh today. Repeat.
Strategic leadership in work and life requires vision, strategy and agile, daily execution. The results are what you set out to achieve. I set out to achieve peace, joy, health and happiness. It’s quite a thing when you realize it’s happening.
